Whether modern buildings in Lewes are successful or not, is beside the point (The Argus, May 11). Only time will tell.
What is important is that finally our conservative planners have woken up and are prepared to encourage new design.
Some of these new buildings are more successful than others and some are quite beautiful, which is the way it has always been when new styles emerge.
We can all name some Victorian horror or jerry-built Georgian box with a frilly front.
But at least they were true to their time, as these new buildings are today.
For too long, Lewes has had to put up with new Victorian-Sussex-style flints-on-a-roll rubbish - just take a look at our ghastly library which is currently under construction (hopefully the last of this old-school planning policy) and then compare it to the beautiful Brighton Library.
For once, I think our planning department should be applauded for taking a brave step forward.
