Chairman David Green has dropped the strongest hint yet that there will be a place for Chris Adams in Sussex's new-look cricket management structure.
The county hope to reveal their plans at the end of this week once the committee have mulled over Green's proposals.
He does not want the club to waste Peter Moores' legacy' by bringing outsiders into the key jobs when director of cricket Moores takes up his new role as head of the England Academy on October 1.
Adams, who is in his eighth season as captain, has already indicated that he would retire from playing were he offered a management role at Hove.
"I feel that is where my future lies, perhaps more so than in coaching," Adams said last month.
The roles of both Adams and coach Mark Robinson will be key to any new structure.
Robinson, who switched to coaching in 2002, can expect more responsibility for the professional staff, a move which would be popular with the players.
But the new director of cricket would probably have a slightly different remit to the all-encompassing role Moores has performed for the past three years, which include control of a £1m-plus cricket budget.
Green said: "Once the committee are agreed we will be saying what we are doing and who is going to fill the roles.
"No decision has been made. Having condensed everyone's thoughts I came up with what I felt was a way forward in what is quite a complicated issue. A couple of the committee members have already said that's the way to go.
"There are good people already in place. I don't want to see us waste Peter Moores' legacy.
"The coaches and the players, especially those who have been with him from the start seven or eight years ago, are all steeped in what has happened so you don't really want to upset the boat by changing everything. We've got a good thing going here and my feelings are that if it ain't broke, don't fix it."
