A record number of cross-country cyclists braved sunshine and showers to raise thousands of pounds for The Argus Appeal,
A total of 182 riders and two runners took part in the gruelling 105-mile South Downs Way Challenge between Winchester and Eastbourne at the weekend.
It is the third year the challenge has been held.
The event, staged over three days, is proving increasingly popular despite the tough terrain, featuring steep climbs over windswept, rocky, muddy and uneven tracks.
Fewer than ten riders failed to complete the course.
Two firefighters, Laurie Howick and Rob Jarvis, from Gatwick Fire Service, ran the entire distance. The pair had been in training since before Christmas.
Laurie, who has run similar events before, said: "It's been an enjoyable experience. All our mates at Gatwick think we are mad."
Motor dealer Mark Buckle was one of those who took part for the third time but this year he was accompanied by his 14-year-old son, Matt, who completed the challenge with ease.
Mark said: "I was impressed with the way he stopped to help other riders who were in trouble and helped pitch the tents."
Event organiser Howie Blanks said he was pleased with the way the challenge had grown from year to year. He said: A lot of the work is done by volunteers and I would like to thank them all."
Appeal coordinator Elsa Gillio said: "Our thanks must also go to event sponsors Legal & General, and those who looked after us along the way, including Midhurst Primary School, The Grange Leisure Centre in Midhurst, Brighton Rugby Club, the 6th Hove Scouts, MFI in Hollingbury, Syd's Bikes, Camza Midhurst and Richard Plank and the chaps at Scaffold-It."
