The Desperate Ones are a collective of Brighton musicians who indulge in something a bit different from the norm.
As lead singer Liza explained to the packed Joogleberry crowd: "We do foreign." For a start, their name is borrowed from a Jacques Briel song. And one tune was sung in Dutch and French.
There were between two and seven members of the band on stage at any one time, with the rest sitting at the foot of the stage or at adjacent tables while not required.
Richard Thompson's The Great Valerio featured a soft violin and vibes behind Liza's soft and soaring vocals. Noel Gallagher's Wonderwall, which electric guitarist Paul Simmons joked he knocked up in the toilet, featured harmony vocals between Liza and Gabby, while accompanied by an acoustic from Eric.
You could hear a pin drop during the delicate bits, save the odd customer ordering a drink with the waitresses buzzing around the tables.
But it was well worth the admission price even if the only language you can command is English.
