Tony Mernagh is quoted as saying, "if we don't get park-and-ride... it would mean an increase in city-centre pollution levels... any further improvement in bus service almost certainly relies on reducing congestion in the city centre". (The Argus, May 27).
Mr Mernagh should explain how park-and-ride, by itself, can reduce pollution and congestion, which can only be achieved by a reduction in the level of traffic, which can best be achieved by a reduction in town centre car-parking places.
At a recent conference on climate change in Brighton, organised by the Sustainability Commission, a speaker from Denmark mentioned that in Copenhagen, the number of town centre parking spaces is reduced by two per cent per year. This reduction had resulted in an increase in tourist numbers as it had become a much more pleasant place to be.
