The Lib Dems are not the only ones concerned about the monstrously unfair electoral system, which has returned a Labour majority with the votes of only one-fifth of the electorate.
Those, such as John Hodgson (Letters, May 20), who oppose proportional representation, argue they want to preserve the link between the MP and the constituency.
Very laudable but they seem to have forgotten the Jenkins report, commissioned by the Labour Government, favoured preserving the link.
Under its proposals, at least 80 per cent of MPs would continue to be elected on a constituency basis with a proportional top-up of MPs elected from a wider area.
This alternative system, similar to the one used to elect the London mayor, would ensure MPs had majority support in their constituencies.
Under pressure from MPs, who were fearful of losing their seats, Tony Blair kicked the report into the long grass.
The outcome of the General Election shows it is high time such a proposal was given urgent consideration.
