Thank you for your article on the dangers to herring gulls of fishing line and the wonderful people, such as Roger Musselle, who take care of these injured birds.
We can help prevent injuries to wildlife by making our household waste safe. For example, by cutting items into small pieces to prevent choking and by tightly tucking in the lids of tins and squashing the tins down so creatures, such as hedgehogs, don't get stuck inside.
I am concerned for the plight of the herring gulls.
Meridian recently repeated its programme Neighbours From Hell, on which there was a distorted and inaccurate criticism of gulls. The largest of the seagull family was shown to viewers.
Gulls are beautiful and fascinating birds, which are sadly misunderstood and unappreciated. It is unfair and irresponsible of Meridian to put out such an unbalanced programme.
Seagulls and herring gulls are protected species but their numbers decrease every year according to the RSPB. By the way, it is illegal to disturb or destroy a seagull or herring gull nest.
