Why has the proposed King Alfred project not been killed off when the council admits the sports facilities have been reduced, an indoor bowls facility removed and the swimming pool slashed in size by a third, making it smaller than the existing facility?

The number of homes has gone up from the 300 to 400 suggested by planning officers to 750.

The council board, working with Frank Gehry and developer Karis on the project, admitted Brighton and Hove do not have enough schools, doctors and other services to support the added population.

It says problems with the new plans include fewer affordable homes, insufficient parking, inadequate road access, overshadowing from the tall buildings and an anticipated failure by Karis to meet sustainable energy targets.

Look out for the phase two meeting in about two weeks.
