Chris Adams today played down promotion talk after helping his Sussex Sharks go second in the table.

But the county skipper admits his team have broken "the habit of a lifetime" by getting off to a flyer in totesport League division two.

Sussex beat hosts Scottish Saltires with eight wickets and 16.3 overs to spare at The Grange yesterday, led by an undefeated 93 off 72 balls by opener Matt Prior.

They are now two points behind Durham with a game in hand. The top two meet at Arundel a week tomorrow.

Adams said: "It's a little bit early to be thinking about promotion but we were keen to start this one-day season like we finished last year, when we had some good results.

"We are very keen to break the habit of a lifetime and actually start a season well in one-day cricket. If we then go on to do what we did last season, it should bode well.

"Yesterday was very pleasing. We outplayed them in all departments."

South African all-rounder Johan van der Wath strained a leg muscle during his sixth over and had to be relieved by Carl Hopkinson Adams said: "We took him off for some treatment just as a precaution and Hoppo came on and got two wickets."
