What is councillor Paul Elgood playing at? At the last policy and resources committee meeting at Hove Town Hall, held to grant permission, in principle, to profoundly alter the design brief of Frank Gehry's plans for the King Alfred site, he declared an interest and said he could take no further part in the debate.
The reason he gave for walking out and refusing to vote was that he had campaigned against the development as a candidate in the recent General Election.
But that doesn't wash. Councillor Elgood also campaigned vociferously in the same election against plans to close Hove Library but this did not prevent him from participating in similar debates on that issue.
Worse still, in failing to substitute either of his LibDem colleagues at the meeting, he not only ensured this hideous scheme went through on the casting vote of chairman Ken Bodfish, the council's leader, but also his actions effectively disenfranchised the many LibDem voters in the city, not to mention his constituents in Brunswick and Adelaide ward, of which I have the misfortune to be one.
He is riding two horses and one or both are riding for a fall. I call upon him to resign his council seat.
