I always read and hear reports about the dreadful state of NHS hospitals and, in some instances, the poor treatment some patients have received.

Apart from the bad impression this gives, it must worry future patients and be totally demoralising for NHS staff.

But after my treatment at the Sussex County endoscopy department, I saw a different picture. My treatment, the attention I received and the condition of the unit would not have been better had I gone private.

Within four days of seeing my doctor, I was given an appointment and duly arrived - full of apprehension.

I was greeted by Nick, a nurse, and from that moment onwards, was treated with the utmost kindness and care. He took the time to explain what was going to happen.

As I am 90 years old, I asked if I could be unconscious during the examination.

My request was granted and I was looked after by the woman who performed the procedure and by Nick, who was with me when they gave me the anaesthetic, when I woke up and who stayed with me until I returned home.

I cannot praise the dedication and kindness of the staff in this unit enough.

Thank you to everyone who works in the edoscopy unity. Keep up the good work.
