This week, Amnesty International released a major report about a country where it suspects thousands of vulnerable people were detained last year, many arbitrarily, without a court ever reviewing whether this was lawful.

Children and pregnant women are locked up there, too.

Once detained, most get inadequate access to legal advice. For many others, there appears to be no end in sight.

This country is the UK. The people behind bars are those who have sought asylum here.

Amnesty members in Brighton and Hove are calling on the Government to come clean and reveal how many people who have sought asylum hereare detained each year.

We want an end to the legal limbo into which they are placed, with an automatic review of the legality of detaining them.

We feel depriving someone of their liberty should only ever be a last resort.

We hope, during Refugee Week, from June 20 to 27, people will support our call for compassionate treatment of people who arrive in Britain seeking safety. Come along and celebrate refugees' lives and inform yourself at Hove Town Hall on Sunday, June 26.
