Nesting starlings on a decaying pier are among the inspirations for public art projects which have been awarded £80,000.
The latest round of Art Plus Development Awards will go to 11 projects including three schemes for art work in Brighton and two in East Sussex.
The awards from the Arts Council England South East and the South East England Development Agency (SEEDA) were announced at the Jubilee Library in Brighton.
Artists and organisations have until March to develop proposals when a panel decides on the winners.
Choreographer Simone Clark won a slice of the money with her homage to Brighton's West Pier.
The former University of Brighton student will use dancers to show the movement of starlings roosting in the Grade-I listed pier. She plans a performance in the city.
The architecture of Brighton also inspired Rowena Easton and Mike Blow, who use the acoustics of modern buildings to create sound works.
The history of the Palm House at Stanmer Park will be used by artist Will Nash to create a new structure near Stanmer House on the edge of Brighton.
University of Brighton graduate Judith Alder is researching a sensory sculpture trail through Eastbourne.
An award also went to Willingdon Community School in Eastbourne for plans to create light and sound installations.
