You can't have it both ways by making it difficult for the motorist by interrupting the smooth flow of traffic on the one hand, then complaining about cars' pollution on the other.
If you want create more pollution, make cars stop and start, give them lots of traffic lights, lots of bus stops which project into the road and squash traffic from two lanes into one.
Every time a vehicle has to slow down then accelerate, it generates more pollution than if it was constantly moving.
There is also a myth that if you build a new road, more cars will spring out of nowhere to fill it. Where's the evidence for the sudden appearance of new cars to fill them?
Brighton and Hove City Council has a problem: It doesn't accept car travel is inevitable but the car is here to stay.
The problem to be wrestled with is how to cope with it.If we fail to do so, tourists will stay away, businesses and the city will suffer.
