Tributes have been placed at the spot where a father of two was found dying from a stab wound.

As police conducted house-to-house inquiries, flowers and a small cuddly toy dog were left at the crime scene in Pavilion Road, Worthing, along with a message from the victim's wife.

Chris Stones, 27, was found with a single stab wound to the stomach in what police believe was an unprovoked attack.

Mr Stones had separated from his wife Tabatha but the pair were still close and he was devoted to his children, Tiah, two and a baby boy.

Tabatha's message read: "I will always love you Chris. You'll always be in my heart. Always and forever, your Tab."

Another card said: "To Chris, love you forever. Loads of love. Jamie." The names Tiah, Bobby and Jordan were also written on the note.

A 29-year-old Worthing man arrested on Friday in connection with the incident was released on bail last night and inquiries are continuing. Mr Stones was walking with a friend shortly after 11pm on Thursday and was planning to go into his friend's house.

He did not follow him inside and when the friend came out again he found Mr Stones lying on the pavement.

It was believed Mr Stones, who lived in Cowper Road, Worthing, was involved in an argument prior to the stabbing.

Mr Stones moved to Worthing about six years ago and was on a vocational course in bricklaying at a local college.

He was a dedicated Manchester United fan and would often meet friends and family in The Wheatsheaf pub in Richmond Road, Worthing.
