I am a sucker for a good love story and Jane Eyre is one of the best.
Constance Cox has adapted Charlotte Bronte's novel for the stage but for the characters to be believable Mr Rochester must have a strong attraction and there must be an obvious chemistry between him and the young governess.
This has been achieved in Ian Dickens' excellent production. Peter Amory (known for his role as Chris Tate in Emmerdale) is the definitive Rochester.
He looks good and acts well. Playing opposite him in the role of Jane is Sarah Mowat, who brings just the right naivety and honesty to the part.
Praise must go to 14-year-old Melissa Taylor in her first major role as Rochester's ward Adele.
She is touring with her mother and father and hopes to make the stage her profession. Her stage presence and lack of nerves must make this a certainty.
Eastbourne favourite Katie Evans is also firstclass as the housekeeper Mrs Fairfax and Butterflies star Bruce Montague gives a good cameo performance as the bumbling lawyer.
The music is a vital factor in setting the atmosphere and Alan Miller Bunford must be congratulated on his set.
Jane Eyre will also be playing at the Theatre Royal, Brighton from July 18 to 23.
