The traffic "chaos" on some roads in the centre of Brighton proved a park-and-ride bus service could improve the attractiveness of Brighton to day-trippers, such myself, on busy summer days.
I visited the city on the Sunday before last, arriving by train then gliding past the A23 tailback.
It was immediately noticeable how pleasant the road from Brighton Station and the area around Churchill Square, which are mainly used by buses, were.
Only reaching the Old Steine did I realise the traffic jams included cyclists in their thousands, who were in a good mood, no doubt relieved at having arrived safely.
Walking to St Paul's Church past fuming motorists, I noticed buses were whizzing past the queues.
I caught a bus back to the city centre and realised the bus lanes could easily whisk you to the seafront.
However, on the way, the bus got stuck at a short gap in the bus priority lane at a junction opposite the Pavilion.
If buses are to fulfil their potential, they need uninterrupted routes. A small investment would give buses the run of the city.
