In reply to Ian James' walk-and-ride idea (Letters, June 30), perhaps he would like to try walking and riding from Pease Pottage.
There are simply no buses here.
I estimate many of those in the jams after the London to Brighton bike ride came via the M23/A23 and so would have been unable to use buses because of the distance, time factor and expense. (It is still cheaper to drive to Brighton and park than to get the train, especially as I have to drive eight miles in the opposite direction to even get near a station.)
I rarely have problems getting stuck in the city. I travel earlier than the crowds and get in through the backroads of Brighton, bypassing the jams entirely.
The problem stems from the narrow one-way system which is unable to cope with traffic.
However, traffic densities in other local areas are so low, you can get into the town centre in ten minutes from the bottom of the A23 without even getting near the speed limit.
