In response to Ian James (Letters, June 30) about walk-and-ride, I don't believe it is the sensible people of this city who are the problem - the majority appreciate how congested the city centre often is.

I can't remember when I last parked my car in the centre. The bus service is excellent and if I do need to go into town, I use it.

You only have to look at the problems which arise as soon as the weather improves and tourists start coming into town, looking for a place to park and enjoy the city.

It is they who need to be informed that it is unacceptable to bring their vehicles into an already congested city. There needs to be a solution and there is no easy answer.

A park-and-ride scheme would, no doubt, upset a certain number of people but with the correct planning, it would be a move forward.

To do nothing would mean looking forward to a more polluted, expensive resort and, eventually, a ghost town.
