How interesting to read (The Argus, June 16) West Sussex County Council (WSCC) has again wasted council taxpayers' money.

This time, it would appear a safety officer at WSCC has decided the recently installed rocks, used to landscape a roundabout in Burgess Hill, posed a hazard to road users and has had them removed, leaving a featureless mess.

It would, of course, be understandable if the rocks had been put there without the permission of WSCC but I understand this was not the case and that, in fact, WSCC approved this attractive feature.

Having sought and obtained approval from WSCC, Burgess Hill Town Council gave permission for Coulstock to sponsor the roundabout and landscape it.

But, once installed, WSCC's health and safety officer decided the rocks were dangerous to motorists who might drive across the roundabout instead of around it.

I presume this same safety officer will now seek to remove all rigid road signs, lampposts and trees from West Sussex roundabouts.

Although not a Burgess Hill resident, I admire the way the town council has always sought to provide interesting designs for the town's roundabouts, assisted, of course, by generous local companies which provide sponsorship.

How sad some of West Sussex County Council's public servants don't have the same imagination and instead, fill their time by looking for ways to wrap us in cotton wool.
