I recently received a letter from Cityclean informing me refuse sacks will no longer be collected.
When wheelie bins were first introduced in the eastern part of Brighton and Hove, our councillors asked Cityclean to allow one bag of garden refuse to be taken.
By accepting this argument, Cityclean appeared to acknowledge that by withdrawing this service, it would lead to more trips to the refuse site at Wilson's Avenue - in direct contradiction of Brighton and Hove City Council's aim of reducing car journeys.
The council appears to have overlooked the seasonal demand for disposing of grass cuttings and hedge trimmings in more suburban parts of the city. This type of garden waste does not compost easily.
Wheelie bins may work in more urban environments but they are not sufficient to cope with even small amounts of garden refuse.
Come on Cityclean, reduce car journeys on the A259 and take at least one bag of garden refuse.
