Car clubs, where members share the cost of using cars for specific periods of the day (The Argus, July 6), is an idea I hope will become a popular means of getting about.

But even more interesting and enterprising is the commercial use of bikes, which one local estate agent in Kemp Town, Bonett's, is using for its business.

Cycling is efficient and cheap, as well as healthy and enjoyable.

It can also help save energy, does not cause pollution, is quiet and relatively easy to park.

space than a parked bike.

With average car occupancy in cities often only about 1.3 people per vehicle, a car requiring 18sqm of space uses about 14sqm per person, in contrast to the four sqm per person for a cyclist to move freely and two sqm for a pedestrian.

To encourage the use of bikes, Brighton and Hove City Council has provided many cycle tracks.

With some 800 million bicycles worldwide and 14 million in Britain, this is now the real way forward.
