Fresh from Glastonbury, the good old boys from Hayseed Dixie whooped it up at Komedia, raising hell with their own brand of "rockgrass" music.
According to their own folklore, Hayseed Dixie come from a remote valley in the Appalachian mountains where moonshine and marijuana fuelled their innate Bible Belt mania as they grew up listening to Hank Williams and inherited AC/DC albums.
The result was four fun-loving, self-confessed hillbillies playing rock standards, such as Black Sabbath's War Pigs, Led Zep's Black Dog and Queen's Fat-Bottomed Girls, at a frantic bluegrass pace. They could be the boys playing the chase music in Dukes Of Hazzard.
But on the quiet, Hayseed Dixie Barley Scotch, Don Wayne Reno, Dale Reno and Jason D Smith are also skilful musicians, which helps keep the music fresh in case all the clowning around wears thin. They even throw in the odd composition of their own, such as the charming I'm Keeping Your Poop.
It's also interesting to hear how some tracks work better in their rockgrass arrangements than others. For example, Green Day's Holiday never quite took off but an unlikely candidate such as Outkast's Roses was huge fun.
The highlight of the show was a barn-storming, expanded version of AC/DC's Highway To Hell which brought a rip-roaring evening of good music and silliness to a fitting climax.
