HUNDREDS of people took to the streets for the historic Steyning Walking Races yesterday.

The Easter Monday event attracted people of all ages, with children lining up with veterans for dozens of races. The races ranged from a short walk for children under seven to 15 miles for adults. Olympic athlete Chris Carter was one of the most distinguished competitors. He first competed in the event as a schoolboy in 1952, and again as a junior in 1957. Mr Carter, who ran the 800 metres in the 1964 and 1968 Olympics, and who is now director of South of England Athletics, took part in the full 15-mile race. The annual event's history goes back to 1903, and the races have always used the same route around the town. Cups and trophies will be given to the winners in all eight events at a forthcoming presentation evening.
