NEWHAVEN Fort is open to visitors once more after being closed for a £200,000 winter refit.

Exhibitions and displays have been made more interesting, exciting and up to date, giving people a feel of what life was like when the fort had its heyday. More than a century old, the fort is an integral part of Newhaven's history and is well worth visiting. The cash came from the Government Single Regeneration Budget because the restored fort will help revive Newhaven's faltering economy. This demonstrates that it's not just industry and offices that contribute towards a town's success. Let's hope that a Lottery bid succeeds for a much more ambitious project to open disused tunnels and build a proper car park. Then the fort could become one of the major tourist attractions in Sussex with plenty to interest everyone from casual visitors to military historians.
