TOWN centre roadworks caused havoc along some of Brighton's busiest roads yesterday.

But Brighton transport chiefs today promised the pain of traffic jams caused by the roadworks is almost over. And they pledged that the improvements would make the misery suffered by drivers since the work began worthwhile. Motorists heading into town yesterday faced 30-minute delays alongaffected stretches. Ditchling Road, Viaduct Road and Preston Circus were among the worst hit with some incoming traffic turning back to avoid the queues. Sussex Police spokesman Sgt Ivor Fabb said: "The roadworks seem to be an ongoing problem. But despite the long queues no police resources were needed." More jams are expected in Brighton again this week as work on the London Road traffic management scheme continues. Resurfacing in New England Road, Viaduct Road and Ditchling Roadis to continue for another week. Work in Ditchling Road between Viaduct Road and Union Road began yesterday. It will be made one-way southbound during the day with northbound traffic being diverted. Transport chairman John Ballance said: "The pain is almost over with work on this scheme." New England Road will be resurfaced today and tomorrow. Part of Preston Circus will be treated on Wednesday before contractors move to St Peter's Place.
