THERE have been many attempts over the years to run scheduled services from Shoreham Airport but they have usually foundered.
This was because the aircraft used were small and had a range restricting them to northern France or the Channel Islands. They were also liable to cancellation in wet weather when the airport had a grass runway. Now Shoreham has an all-weather strip which has been extended so that it can take larger planes. These also have a greater range, bringing more popular destinations within reach. There could be a role for Shoreham as a local airport serving the Brighton, Hove and Worthing area to provide a convenient service for people who do not want to bother with Gatwick. But the airport will have to ensure that there is a regular demand for them, that they are properly marketed and that the planes do not disturb local people. There should be operators around who could run a reasonable service from Shoreham.
