TWO women who left terrifying messages on the voice mail of a 26-year-old woman's mobile phone have been jailed.

Unemployed Ivana Mancini and Pamela Magaby left dozens of messages on Rachel Carson's mobile calling her names and threatening to kill her and her family, Lewes Crown Court heard.

The defendants said they knew where Miss Carson lived and would go and cut her up. They also threatened to hurt Miss Carson's mother and molest her ten-year-old son, the court was told.

The women, who both admitted having a drink problem, made the calls after spending the day drinking at the Hartington pub in Cavendish Place, Eastbourne.

When arrested police found a photograph of Miss Carson, some money and a makeshift knife hidden in Mancini's sock.

Wayne Cranston-Morris, prosecuting, said Mancini, 31, and Magaby, 27, had never met Miss Carson but were persuaded to make the calls by a man whose sister was going out with an ex-lover of hers.

The man said his sister, Lindsey Collins, complained she was being hassled by Miss Carson, although the court heard there was not a shred of evidence to support his allegation.

Mr Cranston-Morris said: "The messages were left on Miss Carson's mobile phone voice mail. One of them said, 'Our mate's just told us what you have been doing and we are going to kill you'.

"Six hours later they left another message saying, 'We are going to kick your face in. I know where you live and I know what you have done. Do you want a shooter in your head?'."

Mr Cranston-Morris then added: "They said, 'We know where your mother lives. Your kid will get cut up and molested if you don't stop what you are doing'."

The defendants, both from Leslie Drive, Eastbourne, admitted making threats to kill.

Magaby was jailed for 15 months, while Mancini was given 18 months.

Marcus Fletcher, defending both women, said a series of calls were made on September 17 last year from midday to 7pm.

He said neither had any intention of harming Miss Carson and they were sorry for the upset.

He explained how Mancini was given Miss Carson's photograph by the man in the pub and that she had hidden the knife, a blade stuck in a wine cork, in her sock to stop Magaby from harming herself.

Mr FLetcher added: "They say the only reason they made the calls was because they were intoxicated."
