POLICE have smashed a crime ring responsible for a spate of thefts which has robbed some victims of their livelihoods.

Dozens of workmen's tools stolen from cars, vans and garages were recovered when five officers raided two addresses in north Brighton.

Some tradesmen have seen their one-man businesses go to the wall because of the thefts.

Tools seized were worth more than £2,000 and included drills, saws and plumbing equipment.

There were also tennis rackets, stereos, baby seats and a £2,700 Ford Escort Xr3i that was about to be stripped for parts.

Two people, a man aged 19, and a boy aged 16, were arrested on suspicion of theft and handling stolen property.

They were taken to the John Street police station for questioning.

Police said inquiries were continuing.

Yesterday's raids were the climax to weeks of surveillance and intelligence gathering by the Brighton police North Sector pro-active unit.

Force press officer Carolyn Bond said an open day may be organised at the police station for losers to identify their property.

She said: "We want to return as much property as possible to rightful owners."

Anyone with information is asked to contact the pro-active unit on 01273 606744.
