ARMED police swooped on a man with a gun at a hospital for the mentally ill.
The 38-year-old Littlehampton man, who has not been named, turned up at Homefield Hospital, Worthing, late last night and told staff inside through an intercom that he had a gun in his car.
Staff refused him entry and alerted the police while the man returned to sit in his car.
More than 15 officers, some of whom were armed, were scrambled to the scene at midnight and found the man in his green Ford Mondeo outside the hospital.
He was quickly arrested without incident and officers found an unloaded shotgun in the vehicle's boot.
No shots were fired and no one was injured. The man was this morning in police custody at Worthing police station.
A spokeswoman for Worthing Priority Care NHS Trust said: "Staff acted professionally and took appropriate action. The manager of Homefield will be personally talking to all the staff to ensure their well-being."
