Worthing Tony Malone 01903 246486 COMMUNITY CENTRE: Broad-water Community Association are a group in Worthing trying to raise funds and awareness of the need for a Community Centre in Broadwater.

Worthing Borough Council have transferred the lease of the Parish Rooms to the association for a few years to give them some experience of the responsibilities of running a centre. They have been organising monthly events all this year with all profits going into the fund.

The next event at the Parish Rooms will be on Saturday, November 13, from 2pm and will be a Christmas Craft Market. Entrance is free and there will be refreshments available.

If you would like to become a member it will only cost £1 off the entrance fee for any of the events in the coming year.

Visit to Oxford: Sunny October 27 showed off its autumn colours on a drive to Oxford for a minibus full of St Mary's congregation.

The destination was St John's College to follow up a kind invitation to tea with Matthew Morrison, now in his third year as St John's Chapel organist and choirmaster.

Matthew has played the organ at St Mary's from a tender age and won a scholarship to study Music and Law in Oxford.

Dead Guilty: "What a silent audience!" Director Jackie Charman is delighted at the response to her tightly played production of Richard Harris's psychological thriller, Dead Guilty.

Billingshurst Dramatic Society's production team set the scene on the Women's Hall's tiny stage with an elegant West London home, complete with staircase, where clever lighting by Jon Pilkington added lurking shadows.

It wasn't until the lights faded for the last time and the cast assembled to take their bows that the audience broke in to spontaneous applause.

Garage Sale: Cars were bumper to bumper down Old House Lane in Coneyhurst on Sunday for the last Billingshurst Macmillan Supporter Group garage sale of the year.

Bargain prices were offered on everything from electrical goods to furniture, bric-a-brac to soft furnishings and brisk business amounted to a superb £890.

In addition to this result, chairman Jenny Kern announced they were nominated to benefit from the Rotary Charity Performance of Dead Guilty to the tune of £805.

Songs of Praise: The village hall was packed for the first ever Village Songs of Praise on Sunday.

To celebrate All Saints' Day, there was a fancy dress competition, a painting competition and a tea party in the Stanley Room. There were two first prizes for paintings, won by Simon Bass and Charlie Footer. Simon Pearce as St George won the fancy dress with Jessica Spurling as St Mary second and Emma Haynes third as St Cecilia.

The Rev Tom Lusty interviewed newcomers to the village, Jane and Malcolm Footer, with their sons Henry and Charlie.

Jenny Kern, chairman of Billingshurst's indefatigable Macmillan Supporters Group, was interviewed by Julia Banks. Jenny is utterly amazed at the generosity of local people who have helped raise £22,000 towards the running of the Macmillan Unit in Midhurst.

In his interview by Neville Lee, Francis Maude MP recalled growing up in a Christian family. He never planned a career in Government, but discovered he was 'wanting to make a difference'. He finds there are moments for prayer and reflection even at his busiest.

FIREWORKS: Eastbourne Miniature Railway's firework display is tomorrow at 7.30, £5 entrance.

Harvey Moons, Mountfield Road, are holding a free firework display tomorrow.

IN BLOOM: Staff and children at Highfield School have won gold after going Green. The school won three prizes in the Eastbourne in Bloom presentation ceremony.

One of their tasks was to turn a pond into a environmental area which all the children can use. The work on the pond won then the recognition of saving the pond area from destruction due to plans to build a supermarket on the site.

FIREWORKS: Weir Wood Sailing Club are holding their annual fireworks display on Saturday (the sailing club is off Priory Road, Forest Row).

The bonfire will be lit around 6.45pm and the fireworks at about 7pm. Food and disco are included in the prices - £15 for a family, £3 for a child and £5 for adults. There will be a prize for the best dressed guy.

ART FOR KIDS: Children's art sessions are being held at the new Hoathly Hill Kindergarten on Saturdays between 9-11am. CONCERT: The Jupiter Chamber Orchestra are performing the Strauss Horn Concerto No.1 and Beethoven's Symphony No.2 on Sunday at 6pm in Michael Hall School. The soloist is Nicholas Korth and the conductor Nicholas Logie.

MILLENNIUM: The millennium celebrations for Ashurst Wood, to be held in the Village Centre, have been set at £15 for adults and £8 for children who are 16 or under on December 31, 1999.

WARNING: Recently an elderly Offham resident was duped into believing that she had won a holiday as the result of filling in a market research form.

She was advised that they wished to call on her personally. Within an hour a man called and after some very persuasive sales tactics she was persuaded to buy a vacuum cleaner system priced at nearly £2,000. Thankfully she paid by cheque which was stopped via the bank.

WINNERS: Spuds at Upper Dicker reports a good harvest even if the weeds were a continuous battle. But it was particularly impressive as it was the first growing season on many of the allotments for many years.

Several members managed a few entries for the Produce and Flower Show which was a great event and I have 55 results.

SPUDS won a couple of firsts for their shallots and basket of five different vegetables. I note a few neighbours' names, like Cundell, McCutchan and EIlinor for tomatoes, cooking apples, marmalade and victoria sandwich to name a few!

LYCHGATE: Meeting in Arlington Village Hall between the millennium committee, the parochial church council and the inspecting architect for St Pancras church last month agreed on the revised design for the lychgate. The new design will cost more than the amount raised, but the PCC has promised to contribute to the fund.
