CRAWLEY-BORN Helen Young has been named as the BBC's new senior weather forecaster.
Ms Young, 30, is the youngest person ever to hold the job - and the first woman. She will lead a team of 19 Met Office forecasters.
Her promotion puts her in charge of veterans like Michael Fish.
Colleagues David Lee, 48, and John Kettley, 47, were also reported to have applied for the job.
Mr Lee and colleague Richard Edgar made bullying and harassment allegations against Ms Young's predecessor, Bill Giles, who was cleared on appeal by the Met Office.
Ms Young began her career with the Met Office in 1990 as a weather presenter for the BBC's regional programme in Bristol, where she had attended Bristol University.
She moved to the BBC Weather Centre in 1993 and was appointed deputy manager just under two years ago.
Ms Young, who now lives in Surrey and is married to a British Airways pilot.
