A Sussex town has been given a boost with the creation of 60 jobs.

High Street chain Budgens announced it is opening a new store in Selsey in June and aims to recruit as many staff from the area as possible. The store has a shopping area of 8,000 sq ft with seven checkouts. Free parking will be provided for 114 cars.

Other facilities will include toilets, baby changing facilities, a customer service desk and a cashpoint machine. Store chiefs say Selsey is an ideal location for the store because it will be able to cater for the thousands of holidaymakers who flock to the town every year.

A spokesman said: "Budgens has always been based in the local community and although we now operate nearly 200 stores, we intend to remain in the heart of the local community. You will find our stores on high streets and in small towns and villages rather than at large

out-of-town superstore locations."

The new supermarket will offer a range of fresh food, groceries and household goods, along with a range of organic food and a rotisserie, which will sell fresh roast chickens, barbecue spare ribs and deep fried potato wedges.

The decision by Budgens has been welcomed by residents and fellow traders in the town. Phil Hamer, from the town's traders association, said: "This is a welcome boost for the area. Employment can be difficult for small towns like this, so anything that can help create jobs and boost the economy has to be a good thing."

The new shop is expected to open at the end of June, in time for the summer season.
