Billy Twelvetrees was the top performer as Horsham completed a double at the Sussex Minis Festival.

The star centre scored three tries and kicked four conversions as Horsham under-11s beat Brighton 28-0 in their final. Giles Baker also touched down in a tournament hosted by East Grinstead that featured more than 200 players and 600 spectators.

Organiser Phil Major said: "If you had to pick a player of the day, he wouldn't have been far short. He was very accomplished all round, he passed, tackled, scored and was calm. He could go on. There were about 20 other boys who did really well, but Billy was outstanding."

Billy, who goes to school in Wisborough Green, said: "I really enjoyed the day. I nearly won the under-nines tournament a couple of years ago when I was at Pulborough, but we drew and the title was shared. I'm pleased I've gone one better now."

He also plays football for Horsham but said: "I don't like it as much as rugby. Rugby's a rough game and I like tackling."

His mum Beverley, who says the family name originates from Lincolnshire, added: "Billy is very passionate about his rugby. It's his life."

Billy's 13-year-old twin brothers Joseph and Matthew, who play for Horsham under-13s, were part of the Pulborough side which won the under-nines competition a few years ago.

Brothers James (two) and Tom Johnson score the tries to help Horsham under-eights overcome East Grinstead 15-5.

Luckless Craig Jackman joined in the celebrations as Haywards Heath beat East Grinstead 14-7 to lift the under-12s crown for the first time.

Craig helped Heath win their semi-final but was forced to miss the final with pneumonia.

The 12-year-old Oathall pupil said: "Missing the final was a blow but I couldn't have played. The pneumonia triggered off my asthma and I had to rest but I enjoyed cheering them on."

Alex Chard and Lewis Jones scored Heath's points. Heath completed a double when the under-sevens defeated East Grinstead 30-5.

Chairman Lorraine Longley, Craig's mother, said: "We're giving our local engravers a lot of work to to do. It's been a great way to finish my term in the chair."

Heath under-nines found Crowborough too strong and lost 10-5. It was Crowborough's first success at the Festival since the under-sevens won four years ago.

Lorraine added: "The team were disappointed because they had won 27 but lost what was their 28th and final match of the season. It's been a brilliant season for Heath, with the senior side playing in the Sussex Cup final against Worthing on Sunday."

Chris Weller sealed victory with the second try East Grinstead's only victory in four finals came as sweet revenge. They defeated Hove-under-10s 5-0, with Dougie Gates scoring a try, after losing at under-nines last year. It was the first time Grinstead had hosted the Festival.

Grinstead included girls in their final line-ups, Zara Williams and Rosie Bellisio at under-sevens and Ashleigh Martin-Turner and Nathalie Cooke at under-eights.

Major said: "The club put in a big effort to mark out the pitches and provide a proper setting. It was a hard but well worth it as you could see how much the players and spectators enjoyed it."

The competition also involved Eastbourne, Hastings and Bexhill, Lewes, Uckfield, Seaford, Heathfield, Hellingly, Rye, Worthing, Crawley, Chichester, Bognor, Pulborough and Midhurst.

Major estimated around 1,500 players and 100 teams took part in total.
