Damion Dobbyn scored a goal in just three seconds, which is quicker than the senior world record.

The 22-year-old striker netted direct from the kick-off for Brighton pub Park View in a Sussex Sunday League Intermediate Division match against Broadwater at East Brighton Park.

He spotted Steve Waller off his line and, with a heavy wind behind him, had a dig. The ball slipped through the goalkeeper's hands with just three seconds on the watch of referee Martin Comber.

Dobbyn was mobbed by team-mates, but modestly declared: "I can't see what all the fuss is about! I've been trying to score from the kick-off for ages. Their keeper was slightly off his line and, with the wind in my favour, it was worth a go.

Comber, who has been refereeing for eight seasons, has never seen anything like it. He admitted: "Since the rules changed last season, which allow players to shoot straight from the centre spot, a lot have been trying their luck. I've seen a few that have gone close, but never one that's actually gone straight in."

Ironically, Comber scored a goal himself after six seconds for Seeboard in a Sussex Sunday League fixture.

Dobbyn's wonder goal betters the senior world record of six seconds, set by Albert Munday for Aldershot against Hartlepool United in the old Fourth Division in 1958.

He added: "I don't think you could ever score any quicker than that, but next time the wind blows I'll have a go!"
