HOVE schoolboy Sean Tomsett made a big impression on his competitive debut in senior kart racing.
Tomsett, 15, kicked off the Summer Championship at Lydd in Kent last weekend by finishing second in the final.
In the first two heats Tomsett finished second and he was also up to second in heat three when his steering collapsed on the last lap.
Starting from the back of the grid in the final, the Patcham High School pupil soared through the field to collect some valuable championship points.
Tomsett has been singled out for a while as a name to watch for in the future and he won a string of novice trophies in junior kart racing, where many top racing drivers begin their careers.
The youngster, who is racing for JS Motorsport this season, has set his sights on one day becoming a Formula One driver.
Tomsett said: "Formula One or Formula Ford is still my goal.
"I have stepped up to senior racing about six months early.
"I feel pretty confident about the season ahead but it will be quite hard as a lot of other good drivers of my age have moved up as well.
"There are now a lot more experienced drivers to go up against."
Tomsett, whose father was a professional boxer, took up kart racing two years ago and soon made his mark.
He finished fourth overall in his first championship and was fourth in the winter series despite a number of mechanical problems.
Despite the competition this season, Tomsett showed his pedigree at Lydd last weekend.
"That will give me plenty of points for the championship," he said.
"If I could finish in the top three or four overall this year, that would be excellent, and I would also like a few podium finishes.
"Then, next year, I hope to compete in the TKM Festival."
