SAMBA BAND: Beach Batteria has started rehearsing again. This is Shoreham's answer to Brazil. Last year this amazing Samba Band got its first booking after being heard playing in public after a few weeks' rehearsal. They wowed the public after an amazing procession on Bonfire Night last year and will be playing in Brighton Festival this year, not to mention Adur Festival.

EASTER SALE: Billingshurst Macmillan Support Group anticipated Easter with their sale in the Village Hall on April 8. The £279 raised was complimented by £257 on their Monday stint at the Leconfield Hall in Petworth.
BRITISH LEGION : Members of Billingshurst British Legion gathered in the Stanley Room on April 10 to honour the dedicated work of their Poppy Appeal collectors.
General John Cowley presented certificates for ten years' Service to Sheila Pattern, Evelyn Skinner, Sara Pesy and Andrew Adams.
One Poppy Appeal organiser, Stanley Warren, announced a total of £5,213 sent to HQ for 1999. Stanley received a tiepin from chairman Colin Banks for his 11 years' service in this capacity. Stanley steps down as Secretary this year although he continues as membership secretary and Poppy Appeal organiser.
EASTER CELEBRATIONS: A giant Easter Bunny and colourful bonnets brightened the day-long electricity blackout in Billingshurst on April 12 when Dauxwood Pre-School held their end of term celebrations in Natts Lane.
Best in the Easter Bonnet competition were Louise Crawley and Samuel Beaneys. Robin Taylor received the prize for the most sponsorship for the Bunny Hunt.
VILLAGE SPRING CLEAN: Despite the freezing morning of April 15, the Billingshurst in Bloom Spring Clean went ahead, with five members of their Ground Force and three members of the public taking part.
TEA DANCE: Longfield Manor Residential Home opened its doors for a tea dance on Saturday when Nessa Osgood, performing on the electric organ presented by Billingshurst Lions, and Will on the spoons set toes a-tapping and wheelchairs whirling.

DIRECT LINE LADIES TENNIS CHAMPIONSHIPS: Tickets for this international sporting event are selling so well that only one-third of the seats are now available.
This tournament precedes Wimbledon and is held at Devonshire Park from June 17-24. The traditional Ladies Day is on Tuesday, June 15, when women who attend have the opportunity to wear their best hats.

MILLENNIUM GIFT: A reminder that any child who does not attend either Herstmonceux School or any of the playgroups and who lives within the parishes of Herstmonceux and Wartling, is 11 years of age or under, should have their name registered at Jim Crouch's Store by May 1 so that they can receive their commemorative gift as part of the millennium celebrations to be held in the village on July 1.

MAY DAY: The Millennium May Day Celebration to be held on Bank Holiday Monday, May 1, on Yapton Village Green will commence at 1.45pm with a parade by the band of Littlehampton Sea Cadets. The children of Yapton Primary School will dance around the Maypole at 2.20, followed at 2.35pm by the junior dancers of the Martlets Sword and Morris Men and the adult Morris Dancers at 3.10pm. The Regis Pom-Pom Troopers will perform at 3.50pm.
An invitation only children's tea party will take place in the Village Hall from 4pm, organised by the Free Church.
Throughout the afternoon a tug-of-war competition with various teams from around the villages will take place. There will be refreshments on sale from the Club Room of the Village Hall during the afternoon.
Many organisations will be manning stalls around the arena, including St Mary's Church, The Village Hall Committee, The Evergreens, Yapton School, The Flower Club, Yapton and District Cottage Gardeners Society, The Village friends, The Local History Group and the Womens Institute.
