Last Saturday in Horsham a brass band played to appreciative shoppers in a pedestrian area.

Flowers decorated the band stand and the music added charm and captivated many.

During an interval I spoke with the conductor, Christine Nanoo, and was delighted to hear it was the Hangleton Band.

I asked her why I had not heard of the band in Brighton or Hove and was astonished to hear she had been informed by a Brighton and Hove Council events representative that brass bands did not fit in with the image the council was trying to create - although they could busk if they wanted to!

Does the events committee appreciate we are not all supporters of risqu plays, parades and fringe events? Can we no longer hear bands playing on the Pavilion Lawns on summer afternoons? What of the bandstand?

I suggest many visitors and locals would appreciate such a well-played variety of music. Should we not be supporting our local young talent?
