Mystery surrounds the death of a schoolgirl who was found in bed at her home in Brighton.
Twelve-year-old Kali Hitchcock, of Hawkhurst Road, Coldean, was found by her father yesterday morning after she did not reply when called down to breakfast.
An ambulance took her to the Royal Sussex County Hospital and police were alerted.
Kali had a rash and it was first thought she may have had meningitis. However, this was later ruled out by consultants.
A post mortem was being carried out today by a paediatric pathologist in London and routine police inquiries continued.
Kali is not thought to have had any previous major medical problems.
The girl, who has a younger sister, attended Varndean School in Balfour Road, Brighton.
A spokesman said: "Everyone here is dreadfully upset and all we can do is offer our sincere sympathy and support to the girl's family and friends."
Kali attended Middle Street Primary School before moving to Varndean.
Varndean head teacher Andy Schofield was sending a message of sympathy to Kali's family today.
He said: "Kali was a normal, lovely, nice little girl with many friends. She came to us first last summer for our literacy school.
"She was well liked by all the teachers. She was very helpful and friendly.
"This is a terrible tragedy and our thoughts are with Kali's family."
