The Argus has scooped 11 awards in a series of events which recognise the best talent in the local press.

Angela Wintle was named feature writer of the year in the BT Press and Broadcast Awards Southern Home Counties category.

Her features were highly commended in an awards ceremony run by Newsquest which publishes the Argus, and praised in a competition run by the UK Press Gazette, the media industry's trade magazine.

The Argus was named the South's best daily newspaper in the BT awards, where chief reporter David Edwards won the daily news journalist of the year category. The Newsquest Editorial Awards also honoured Jim Holden, who was named photographer of the year.

Feature writer Jacqui Bealing was also highly commended and crime reporter Phil Mills was singled out for praise for his hard-hitting articles on the Brighton child cruelty case. Newcomer Sally Hall, writing for the Argus since last year, was praised for her abilities.

The Argus website, at www.thisisbrightonandhove.co.uk, was highly commended at these awards and runner-up in the Press Gazette's website of the year category.

Editor Simon Bradshaw said: "These awards recognise the commitment, hard work and skill of the Argus team.

"They prove, once and for all, that the Argus is simply the best."
