The Tories, who are fast becoming a single-issue pressure group rather than a political party, are trading on fear through their campaign to save the pound.
It's based on a notion of sovereignty that belongs in the 19th Century when gunboats surrounded our islands.
In today's interdependent world of multinational companies, global trade and the internet, such beliefs are dangerously outdated and irrelevant. Business organisations know that joining the euro will be vital to continued prosperity and growth, and the Tories will one day have to accept it as well.
Ultimately, it is the tens of thousands of jobs which will depend on our membership of the single currency which must decide the issue, not symbols or sentimentality, but then the Tories rarely cared much about saving people's jobs.
