Eastbourne Eagles produced the result of the season to win 52-38 at Coventry last night.

It was a remarkable display by the Sussex speedway team, who were with-out Paul Hurry and Petri Kokko.

Eastbourne's hopes of winning the Elite League were further boosted by the news that their main rivals for the title, King's Lynn, were beaten 47-43 at Poole.

Joe Screen led the blitz with an 18-point maximum at Coventry.

The home side were so traumatised that even their big two, Americans Billy Hamill and Greg Hancock, could do nothing to halt the Eagles.

They were on the wrong end of a 4-2 by Screen and Martin Dugard in heat 13.

Then, in the next race, Hancock failed to score when he came in as a golden tactical substitute, with Dean Barker and guest rider Rusty Harrison scoring another 4-2.

And in the final heat, Screen and Dugard sunk Coventry without trace with a 5-1 over Hamill and Hancock.

Harrison, a young Australian who has only recently arrived in Britain to ride for Glas-gow, was one of the stars of the night.

He figured in four races where Eagles gained 4-2 wins.

Eastbourne boss Jon Cook described the per-formance as "the best victory in my career."

He said: "We had only four of our main team and demolished them."

Eagles were never headed after heat five.

Coventry: Billy Hamill 11, Greg Hancock 9, David Howe 6, Andy Smith 5, Scott Robson 3, Stuart Robson 3, Shaun Tacey 1.

Eastbourne: Joe Screen 18, Martin Dugard 11, Dean Barker 9, David Norris 8, Rusty Harrison 4, Brent Collyer 2.
