Bas Zuiderent struck a vital 87 to boost Sussex Second XI in their championship clash against Durham at Stockton.
Zuiderent stroked a dozen boundaries off 195 balls in one of his best innings for the County, as Sussex declared 14 behind on 300-8.
Durham stretched their advantage to 90 by the close by reaching 76-3 with Glen Read, a left-arm pace bowler from Horsham, taking two for five from six overs.
Former Sussex star Martin Speight, who made 131 in the first innings, reached 34 before being trapped lbw by Jamie Carpenter.
Sussex earlier resumed on 32-0 and Wasim Khan (64) and Dominic Clapp (33) gave them an encouraging start with a century opening stand.
But they subsided to 212-7 before Zuiderent revived the innings by adding 67 with Nick Creed who hit a battling unbeaten 37 to keep the match open.
