The article by Rowan Dore and the letter from Christine Coombson on Telscombe Tye are both first class (Argus, July 20).
However, what is not emphasised strongly enough is why the independents are so desperate to get their hands on £115,000 from Southern Water.
The answer is the Telscombe Civic Centre is the biggest white elephant on the south coast. It has already cost £500,000 and it is still not finished. It is a financial black hole and the independents are quite happy to keep pouring money down it. They daren't go back to the council taxpayers, hence the dash to Southern Water to try to balance the books.
