Businesses in Sussex are being warned not to fall for a new type of fax con.

Sussex Enterprise said estate agents in Sussex have been targeted by scam artists using a new trick to charge hidden fees. There are fears other firms could be targeted as well.

Estate agents have received requests for large numbers of property details to be faxed to a premium-rate 0906 number.

The request is routine and if the estate agents' operator does not notice the code is for a high-charge line, the firm suffers financially.

The scam is completely legal as it is the responsibility of the sender to check fax fees.

Alan Brooks, director of public affairs and marketing for Sussex Enterprise, said: "This latest fax scam is innovative in its simplicity. We urge all businesses that send out details of goods and services by fax to avoid costly mistakes."
