A guide to the employment of children has been published by Brighton & Hove Council.

Under the Children and Young Persons Act, children can be employed from the age of 13 for limited periods until they reach the end of compulsory education at the age of 16.

In December last year, Brighton and Hove Council brought in bylaws covering the employment of children.

Executive councillor for education Frieda Warman-Brown said: "Having a part-time job is part of growing up for many children.

"But it is important to ensure they are employed safely and that it does not interfere with school work.

"The booklet is a useful guide for children, parents and employers and sets out the regulations very clearly."

Employers have to register their child employees and obtain an employment permit from the council.

The laws states children cannot work before 7am or after 7pm and are not allowed to work more than two hours a day while they are at school.

During school holidays and weekends they can work more hours depending on their age.

Under the law, children are restricted to light work.

The types of employment children cannot undertake include telephone sales, delivering milk or working in a commercial kitchen or fairground.
