I am disappointed to read Co-op shops in Brighton and Hove are taking part in the voucher scheme for asylum seekers. The Co-operative movement has a proud history of supporting the poor and marginalised in our society.
That's why many local people shop and bank with the Co-op.
I hope this was not a commercial decision, based on the fact that participating stores keep any change from the vouchers. This would be an appalling betrayal of the Co-op's principles.
The Co-op should make a stand in defence of asylum seekers by withdrawing from the scheme and stop making a profit out of misery.
