I was very sorry to hear of the experiences of Jorg Seiler and his party of German schoolchildren during their recent visit to the Southwick area (Opinion, August 8).
Sussex Police have, with our local authorities, English language organisations and the transport providers, jointly developed a successful initiative under the banner of Operation Columbus to combat these crimes.
Local beat officers have been working hard around the area of Southwick Square and Green with a view to deterring such incidents.
While we have to accept a minority of local youths have targeted young visitors, our local towns are not dangerous places for them, as the majority of the thousands who visit each year will testify. We are committed, however, to making them even safer.
