In response to my letter querying the deifying of the Queen Mother and suggesting she has never done a day's work in her life (Opinion, August 7), one of your correspondents suggested I should be imprisoned in the tower. I was called ignorant, beneath contempt and asked what I have done for my country. Unlike the Queen Mother I have spent a lifetime paying taxes.

All letters waxed large on the subject of the Queen Mother's duties and how she had performed them, yet not one made any attempt to define these duties. Could it be because all the duties actually consist of are free trips to opening nights at cinemas and theatres, free meals at various banquets and the odd trip to various racetracks?
