Albion manager Micky Adams has labelled his side "a load of rubbish."
And he admits he faces the sack if results don't improve quickly.
Yesterday's 2-0 home defeat by League newcomers Kidderminster Harriers has left Albion labouring in 20th.
Their third loss by that score in four matches was too much for a record Withdean crowd of 6,274.
The players were booed off at the end, then fans chanted "what a load of rubbish."
A downcast Adams conceded: "It was bitterly disappointing. The fans were spot on, we were a load of rubbish.
"Players are lacking confidence for some reason. We have all got to look at ourselves, including myself.
"I have backed these players so far. Now I will have to have a think about it.
"For a team that went 14 games unbeaten at the end of last season to be reduced to this beggars belief.
"It's about 11 players going out there believing in what they are doing and having the guts to get hold of the ball."
Second half goals on the break by Ian Foster and Dean Bennett clinched Kidderminster's third win out of four and lifted Jan Molby's men to third in the table.
Albion now face a crucial home game against Torquay on Saturday before tough trips to Millwall, where they try to overturn a 2-1 deficit in the return leg of the Worthington Cup, and Cardiff.
"If I can't improve it I'll be sacked, it's as simple as that," said Adams.
"We have not started the campaign in the way that everyone thought.
"If results carry on as they are it will be someone else's job sooner rather than later.
"This is now my squad, so I've got no excuses. I take full responsibility for the team I put out there.
"It wasn't good enough and it's down to the lads now to pick themselves up and come out fighting."
